How to Add Another Language Into Your Family Life

After living in Europe for 2 years, we were exposed to so many different cultures and people for whom speaking more than one language was no big deal. Europeans generally speak at least two languages, often more, without thinking that was unusual.

While we were living in Luxembourg, I decided to take my French training and start imparting that to my kids. The goal not so much being that they would become fluent in French, but to expand their horizons, and make them aware of other languages and cultures in the world. However, if they become fluent... that would be AWESOME. Also, because they are still so young, their brain 'catches' language so much easier than when they get older.

I speak mostly English, and about 30% French with my two little ones. I am conversational, not fluent in the language, if you're wondering why I don't do 100% French. We have also put our kids in a French preschool, so they are exposed to native speakers regularly.

Here are some tips of what I have done to make this seem more attainable for your family.

1) Start small. Try making getting dressed a bi-lingual experience. Add a new phrase each day. "Pick your socks." "Choose your shoes & put them on." If you repeat them daily, your kids will soon respond without your needing to repeat in English.

2) Don't give up. Even if your kids don't start speaking back to you in French, just keep adding phrases.

3) Other times to add some language into your second language diet: Meal-time, Bed-time, Potty time, "I love you", etc

It's nice to be able to converse a bit with my almost 5 year old in French, and she is so proud when it happens. She had the biggest smile on her face when she ran to tell Daddy she had a conversation with mama in French. What did we say?
-"Mama, I'm hungry"
-"What would you like to eat?"
-"I want cereal."
-"What kind of cereal would you like to eat?"
-"Life cereal"
-"Please get your spoon and wait at the table."

While not exactly riveting dialogue, I spoke only in french with her, and she understood we perfectly. She spoke 1/2 in French and 1/2 in English, which makes me so proud. She thinks language is fun, which shows me yet again, that this is the best time to be exposing her to it.

Looking back on when I began learning French (middle school), I did not think it was fun AT ALL. Seeing my kids singing French songs, and playing games in French, I have realized it's just another adventure in learning about the world for them. They think it's fun! And, they have an incredible ear for hearing accents. My daughter can say the french "r" with no difficulty at all, while after years of trying my "r" words still sound abysmal.

Don't be intimidated to try this in your own home! Start small and build, and soon your kids will look at you and say "Vert" when you ask them what color something is!

An elevation of the systolic pressure without an elevation of the diastolic pressure, as in isolated systolic hypertension, therefore, increases the pulse pressure. Stiffening of the arteries contributes to this increase of the pulse pressure.

Once considered to be harmless, a high pulse pressure is now considered an important precursor or indicator of health problems and potential end-organ damage. Isolated systolic hypertension is associated with a two to four times increased future risk of an enlarged heart, a heart attack, a stroke, and death from heart disease or a stroke. Clinical studies in patients with isolated systolic hypertension have indicated that a reduction in systolic blood pressure by at least 20 mm to a level below 160 mm Hg reduces these increased risks.

A single elevated blood pressure reading in the doctor's office can be misleading because the elevation may be only temporary. It may be caused by a patient's anxiety related to the stress of the examination and fear that something will be wrong with his or her health. The initial visit to the physician's office is often the cause of an artificially high blood pressure that may disappear with repeated testing after rest and with follow-up visits and blood pressure checks. One out of four people that are thought to have mild hypertension actually may have normal blood pressure when they are outside the physician's office

However, caution is warranted in assessing a single elevated blood pressure reading white. An elevated blood pressure brought on by the stress and anxiety of a visit to the doctor may not necessarily always be a harmless finding since other stresses in a patient's life may also cause elevations in the blood pressure that are not ordinarily being measured. Monitoring blood pressure at home by blood pressure cuff or continuous monitoring equipment can help estimate the frequency and consistency of higher blood pressure readings. Additionally, conducting appropriate tests to search for any complications of hypertension can help evaluate the significance of variable blood pressure readings.

Borderline high blood pressure:
Borderline hypertension is defined as mildly elevated blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg at some times, and lowers than that at other times. As in the case of single elevated blood pressure reading, patients with borderline hypertension need to have their blood pressure taken on several occasions and their end-organ damage assessed in order to establish whether their hypertension is significant.

People with borderline hypertension may have a tendency as they get older to develop more sustained or higher elevations of blood pressure. They have a modestly increased risk of developing heart-related disease. Therefore, even if the hypertension does not appear to be significant initially, people with borderline hypertension should have continuing follow-up of their blood pressure and monitoring for the complications of hypertension.

If, during the follow-up of a patient with borderline hypertension, the blood pressure becomes persistently higher than 140/ 90 mm Hg, an anti-hypertensive medication is usually started. Even if the diastolic pressure remains at a borderline level (usually under 90 mm Hg, yet persistently above 85).

Two forms of high blood pressure have been described: essential (or primary) hypertension and secondary hypertension. Essential hypertension is a far more common condition and accounts for 95% of hypertension. The cause of essential hypertension is multifactorial, that is, there are several factors whose combined effects produce hypertension. In secondary hypertension, which accounts for 5% of hypertension, the high blood pressure is secondary to a specific abnormality in one of the organs or systems of the body. Certain associations have been recognized in people with essential hypertension. For example, essential hypertension develops only in groups or societies that have a fairly high intake of salt, exceeding 5.8 grams daily. Salt intake may be a particularly important factor in relation to essential hypertension in several situations, and excess salt may be involved in the hypertension that is associated with advancing age, obesity, hereditary susceptibility, and kidney failure.

Genetic factors are thought to play a prominent role in the development of essential hypertension. However, the genes for hypertension have not yet been identified. The current research in this area is focused on the genetic factors that affect the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. This system helps to regulate blood pressure by controlling salt balance and the tone (state of elasticity) of the arteries.

Approximately 30% of cases of essential hypertension are attributable to genetic factors. Also, in individuals who have one or two parents with hypertension, high blood pressure is twice as common as in the general population. Rarely, certain unusual genetic disorders affecting the hormones of the adrenal glands may lead to hypertension.

The vast majority of patients with essential hypertension have in common a particular abnormality of the arteries: an increased resistance (stiffness or lack of elasticity) in the tiny arteries that are most distant from the heart. This increased peripheral arteriolar stiffness is present in those individuals whose essential hypertension is associated with genetic factors, obesity, lack of exercise, overuse of salt, and aging. Inflammation also may play a role in hypertension since a predictor of the development of hypertension is the presence of an elevated C reactive protein level (a blood test marker of inflammation) in some individuals.

Certain chronic conditions also may increase your risk of high blood pressure, including high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease and sleep apnea. Sometimes pregnancy contributes to high blood pressure. This hypertension is secondary hypertension. This form of hypertension occurs as a result of other systemic causes which directly or indirectly influence control blood pressure.

These are just some of the horrifying images and written accounts captured in "Nightmare in Nanking," Rhawn Joseph's documentary film about the Japanese Imperial Army's eight-week assault on the former Chinese capital during World War II that left nearly 300,000 Chinese civilians and 70,000 POWs dead.

"The history of the world is written in blood and gore," says Joseph, a San Jose neuropsychologist, author and filmmaker who spent the past 25 years researching atrocities in Nanking. "In the history of warfare, you conquer a city, and let the soldiers loose to rape and steal and kill. That's the reward for a battle well fought, but generally order is restored."

The Nanking Massacre, however, was unique in the history of humanity, Joseph says. Through his English-language film, Joseph argues that the Japanese took pleasure in committing crimes against humanity and had a "propensity toward violence" rooted in their education and culture.

Touring the Bay Area, Joseph will present his 77-minute film for two free viewings at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Aug. 10 at the Fremont Main Library.

An official at the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco said he was not familiar with the film and declined to comment on it.

Asian Men Seek Brides From Poor Nations !

Changing attitudes about love and marriage in rich Asian countries such as Taiwan, Japan and South Korea are pushing many desperate bachelors to seek out brides in other, poorer nations around the region.

Many Asian men, particularly those in rural areas, tend to seek traditional wives who will stay home, doing chores and raising children, says Mika Toyota, a research fellow at the National University of Singapore's Asia Research Institute, and other experts who study the region.

An economic boom in recent decades means women have options their mothers didn't. Better educated, they can have careers - and opt to stay single until Prince Charming shows up, if he ever does.

"Most Japanese women would prefer to live and work in the city," says Jeff Kingston, author of Japan's Quiet Transformation. "A guy out there in the boonies . has a tough job selling the wonders of being a farmer's wife."

Instead, the men increasingly seek women from countries such as China, Vietnam and the Philippines, where income levels are much lower. The practice has led to some complaints of abuse and exploitation, particularly when the unions are arranged by third-party brokers, although some couples say their marriages are as happy as any other.

The men "have more bargaining power" when they travel to poorer countries, says Gavin Jones, a sociologist at the National University of Singapore's Asia Research Institute. "Some of these men are looking for the sorts of women they can't find (in their own countries) - women to wash their clothes, submissive women."

The trend marks a significant shift in countries that have long been ethnically homogenous. Some local South Korean governments, eager to improve the birthrate in an aging country, even subsidize trips abroad for men seeking foreign wives.

In South Korea, the number of marriages in which one spouse is non-Korean tripled from 2001 to 2006, the U.S. State Department reports. Overall, one in eight South Korean marriages involve a foreigner, according to the Korean Statistics Office. In rural areas such as Gyeonggi, along the North Korean border, the figure rises past 30%.

In Japan, the percentage of mixed marriages rose from 1.88% in 1986 to 6.1% in 2006, according to the government's population survey that year.

Until a few decades ago, marriages in these countries were often arranged by local matchmakers who "would show pictures to a man and say, 'Which one do you want?' ," Kingston says.

These days, cultural and economic changes mean that "media and books tell everyone the wonders of love marriage," he says.

More than half of Japanese women in their late 20s are single, up from about 30% two decades ago. A survey by the Japanese insurance industry a couple of years ago found that most single women ages 35 to 54 have no plans to marry.

Marriage brokers charge up to $20,000 to fly lonely men to places such as Vietnam to inspect potential wives, says Mary Kim, vice president of the Inchon Women's Hotline, which offers language training and counseling to foreign brides.

"They meet each other in the morning and get married in the afternoon," Kim says. "Then they go to a hotel. It's a very abnormal way to get married."

In one newspaper ad, a South Korean broker advertises "very beautiful" Vietnamese women: "100% virgins with health certificates for husbands to check."

"It's a different kind of prostitution," Kim says.

South Korea passed a law in December cracking down on unscrupulous marriage brokers, imposing jail sentences for those involved in the sex trade.

However, Kim says, foreign brides are often too confused and frightened to complain to South Korean police when they are beaten at home.

The appeal for the women involved is usually economic, at least at first. Rachelle Lim earned $210 a month as a sales clerk in greater Manila until she was paired with a South Korean suitor. They met on a Friday, were married that Sunday, and she flew to South Korea when her visa came through three months later.

She didn't know what she was getting into. Her new home was cold, the language difficult. The pungent cuisine took some getting used to. And her husband's job as a factory manager kept him away from home six days a week.

"I cannot say I am happy now," says Lim, 29. "Sometimes I think I want to go back to the Philippines."

Culture clashes are frequent, says Fe Gimarino-Kim, a Filipina who married a South Korean in 1996.

In the Philippines, women often run the household and enjoy their own careers. In South Korea, "the man runs things. If you're a Korean wife, you must serve your husband."

Money is often a problem, too: Many foreign brides want to send money to their parents and siblings back home; if their husbands refuse, they sometimes do so surreptitiously. "They keep secrets and send money to their families," Gimarino-Kim says.

Gimarino-Kim formed the Filipino-Korean Spouses Association to lobby on behalf of foreign brides. Four years ago, she successfully lobbied for a law ensuring South Korean citizenship for foreign brides who get divorced after being beaten by their husbands.

Some mixed couples try hard to make their marriages work. South Korean autoworker Kang Ho Kyu, 40, doesn't speak a common language with his Filipina wife of six months, Marilon Royo - so they often communicate using an electronic English-Korean translator.

"We try to work things out," Kang says as his wife, seated next to him, breaks into a beaming smile.

Gimarino-Kim says she's one of the lucky ones, too. She has been in a happy marriage with a South Korean for more than a decade: "It's a gamble," she says. "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose."

Friends of a teen who took her own life after a nude photo of her was sent around her school have come forward to discuss the events that led to the girl's suicide.

"She more like kept to herself, (and) would like hide in the bathroom and cry," said Lauren Taylor, who was best friends with Jessie Logan. "She'd always call me crying."

Logan was an 18-year-old senio More..r at Sycamore High School when a nude picture she sent to her boyfriend was sent to hundreds of students at schools across the area.

Her grades plummeted, and she began skipping school or hiding out in the bathroom to avoid other students.

"They'd call her slut, a whore, a skank," Taylor said. "They'd say she that she was just trying to be a porn star."

But friends said technology allowed the harassment to follow her home or anywhere else she went.

"When she would leave school she would get on her MySpace or her Facebook, and then kids would be messaging her on that or texting her phone, people she didn't even know," Taylor said.

Her friends saw a change in the fun-loving, free-spirited teen.

"She would just look down, and you could see the embarrassment in her face and, like, the pain, and that's when I knew because they were from other schools that everyone had heard about it, and were texting it," said Danielle Korgel, another friend.

The harassment broke Logan's spirit, friends say.

"Once this picture was sent out she just, instead of standing up for herself, she just started putting her head down and letting people say what they wanted to say," Taylor said.

Friends said they knew Logan was depressed and upset by the harassment, but her suicide still shocked them.

"I was in shock," Taylor said. "I couldn't believe that she would take her life. I couldn't understand. I didn't want to believe it, I couldn't believe it."

Logan's friends and family hope her story will serve as a reminder for teens and anyone else who would consider sending nude photos across the Internet or by cell phone

"The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He had suffered injuries believed to be stab wounds," said a spokesman.

"The post-mortem revealed non-fatal injuries to other parts of his body but we are not discussing these further for operational reasons."

Det Chief Insp Nick Scola, leading the investigation, said: "We're currently at an early stage in our inquiries and are keeping an open mind about the circumstances of this man's death.

"I would ask anyone who was in the area last night or in the early hours of this morning and saw or heard anything suspicious to get in touch with us."

Pink Dolphin Appears in US Lake !

Charter boat captain Erik Rue, 42, photographed the animal, which is actually an albino, when he began studying it after the mammal first surfaced in Lake Ca More..lcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern USA.

Capt Rue originally saw the dolphin, which also has reddish eyes, swimming with a pod of four other dolphins, with one appearing to be its mother which never left its side.

He said: "I just happened to see a little pod of dolphins, and I noticed one that was a little lighter.

"It was absolutely stunningly pink.

"I had never seen anything like it. It's the same color throughout the whole body and it looks like it just came out of a paint booth.

"The dolphin appears to be healthy and normal other than its coloration, which is quite beautiful and stunningly pink.

"The mammal is entirely pink from tip to tail and has reddish eyes indicating it's albinism. The skin appears smooth, glossy pink and without flaws.

"I have personally spotted the pink dolphin 40 to 50 times in the time since the original sighting as it has apparently taken up residence with its family in the Calcasieu ship channel.

"As time has passed the young mammal has grown and sometimes ventures away from its mother to feed and play but always remains in the vicinity of the pod.

"Surprisingly, it does not appear to be drastically affected by the environment or sunlight as might be expected considering its condition, although it tends to remain below the surface a little more than the others in the pod."

Regina Asmutis-Silvia, senior biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said: "I have never seen a dolphin coloured in this way in all my career.

"It is a truly beautiful dolphin but people should be careful, as with any dolphins, to respect it - observe from a distance, limit their time watching, don't chase or harass it

"While this animal looks pink, it is an albino which you can notice in the pink eyes.

"Albinism is a genetic trait and it unclear as to the type of albinism this animal inherited."

A close relation of dolphins, the Amazon River Botos, called pink dolphins, live in South America in the Amazon.
